After his shocking Grey’s Anatomy exit, Kevin McKidd is officially ‘The Only Suspect’!

Longtime Grey’s Anatomy fan-favorite Kevin McKidd is officially returning to British television. Following the confirmation of his upcoming departure from the hit ABC medical drama after 18 years of portraying Dr. Owen Hunt, the Scottish actor has been cast as the lead in ITV’s newly commissioned four-part psychological thriller, The Only Suspect.

McKidd, who first joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy back in 2008, released a heartfelt statement addressing the end of his massive multi-decade chapter on the medical series:

“Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years.”

“As that chapter comes to a close, I’m looking forward to what’s ahead — building new work, telling new stories, and taking everything I’ve learned into the next phase of my career.”

“Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously, and I’ve had the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time. I’m particularly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I stepped into directing.”

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Louise Candlish, the television adaptation is being penned by EastEnders and Trigger Point writer Simon Ashdown, with production handled by Red Planet Pictures.

The plot moves between a sweltering London summer in 1995—where a young man named Alex buries a body during a violent storm—and a modern-day heatwave 30 years later. In the present day, Alex is living under an assumed identity with his wife Beth, but his perfect suburban life faces total catastrophe when a new nature trail project threatens to exhume the exact spot where his secret lies hidden.

For McKidd, taking on the intensely complex role of Alex marks an exciting creative homecoming to the UK television landscape. Teasing his involvement and what viewers can expect from the production, McKidd stated:

“Working with ITV on The Only Suspect feels like coming home for me. As an actor, the complex and multilayered role of Alex is exciting to explore and I can’t wait to collaborate with Farren, the whole team at Red Planet Pictures and an amazing ensemble of great British actors.”
