The Shocking Fortune Eric Dane Left Behind: You Won’t Believe His Real Net Worth!

Just a few weeks after saying goodbye to Dawson’s Creek icon James Van Der Beek (who died at age 48 from colorectal cancer on Feb. 11), the world has lost another beloved TV hunk: Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the age of 53.

His cause of death was complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease; Dane went public with his diagnosis just 10 months before his untimely death.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the Dane family said in a public statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife [Rebecca Gayheart], and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

A regular fixture on mega-popular television shows, as well as a veritable sex symbol thanks to his famous Grey’s character Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, Dane was one of the most recognizable actors in the business, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that his net worth was equally impressive. Here’s everything we know about Eric Dane’s net worth, as well as a look back at his Hollywood career.

As of March 2026, Eric Dane’s net worth was estimated at $3 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth; that hefty sum was the culmination of the performer’s decade-spanning career in television (Charmed, The Last Ship) and film (Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day).

Dane got his start on a variety of TV shows in the 1990s, including Saved by the Bell, Renegade, The Wonder Years, Married… with Children and Roseanne. After nabbing recurring roles on Gideon’s Crossing, The American Embassy, Charmed and Las Vegas, Dane went on to join the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan—a.k.a. “McSteamy”—for its third season after appearing as a guest star in Season 2.

It’s unclear how much money Dane made on Grey’s Anatomy, as the exact figures have not been publicly revealed.

Dane starred on the long-running medical drama from Season 3 to Season 8 before being killed off at the beginning of Season 9. He later returned as a guest star in Season 17, visiting Ellen Pompeo’s character Meredith on an imaginary beach when she was in a COVID-induced coma.

During a 2024 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Dane explained he didn’t really have a say in his character getting the boot.

“I think I was let go,” he said, noting that he was struggling with addiction at the time. “They didn’t let me go because of that, although it definitely didn’t help. I was starting to become—as most of these actors who have spent significant time on a show—you start to become very expensive for the network. And the network knows that the show is going to do what it’s going to do irrespective of who they keep on it. As long as they have their Grey, they’re fine.”

He added, “I wasn’t the same guy they had hired. So I had understood when I was let go. And Shonda [Rhimes] was really great. She protected us fiercely. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately…But I was probably fired. It wasn’t ceremoniously like, ‘You’re fired,’ it was just like, ‘You’re not coming back.’”

Grey’s Anatomy isn’t the only series Dane is known for. Other notable TV shows that the San Francisco-born star has appeared in include The Last Ship, Euphoria and Countdown. He’s also starred in movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Borderline.

Dane acted consistently up until 2025; last year, he appeared in the Prime Video crime drama Countdown, the wartime miniseries Kabul, the NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds, and the Jimmy Warden-directed comedy thriller Borderline, starring Samara Weaving and Ray Nicholson. His final film credit will be the indie thriller Family Secrets, which is reportedly in the post-production stage and will be released posthumously; it also features Maia Mitchell, Tyriq Withers, and Thomas Doherty.

Dane announced his ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) diagnosis in April 2025.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he shared with People at the time. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

He added, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
