For weeks, Charity has been blackmailed by evil Dr Caitlin Todd after the latter discovered that Charity and Ross Barton are the biological parents of baby Leyla.

Charity had acted as a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden and her husband Jacob Gallagher. Sarah and Jacob think baby Leyla is biologically their child but in fact Charity and Ross are the biological parents.

Due to knowing this information, Dr Todd has demanded a staggering £100,000 from the Woolpack co-owner, leaving Charity in a state of desperation. Matters then took a deeply disturbing turn when Dr Todd sexually assaulted Charity in Sunday’s episode.

On Monday’s episode, Charity bravely reported Dr Todd and the attack to the police, where soap watchers recognised DS Reid actress Angela Lonsdale.

And now spoilers for next week reveal what happens next. In upcoming scenes, doctor Manpreet Sharma checks on Charity, who lies that her breakdown is postnatal depression.

Manpreet prescribes medication and leaves Charity feeling utterly alone in her new lie as she struggles to open up to her loved ones about what happened.

When Mack Boyd returns, Charity is upset to learn he has told Sarah about her troubles, and once alone, she washes some sleeping pills down with wine.

After learning that her gran is struggling, Sarah feels guilty and believes Charity’s presumed postnatal depression is a result of being her surrogate. Sarah is left further intrigued when Charity suggests there is “more going on”.

However, Charity continues to lie and tell her family that her struggles are due to PND and her lack of sleep. Meanwhile, Mack is left consoling Sarah who sobs, blaming the surrogacy for all Charity’s emotional pain.

In the coming weeks, Charity will face an agonising battle to process the attack, torn between confiding in those closest to her or keeping her trauma locked away.

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX
