Shonda Rhimes confessed she had NO clue how Grey’s Anatomy ends!
For years, fans have wondered how Grey’s Anatomy will eventually conclude. After more than two decades on television, the medical drama has survived cast departures, heartbreaking losses, and countless storylines that many viewers believed could have served as a series finale.
Interestingly, series creator Shonda Rhimes once revealed that she had stopped trying to plan an ending altogether.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes admitted that she no longer had a definitive conclusion in mind for the long-running series. While she originally envisioned several possible endings during the show’s early years, those ideas gradually disappeared as Grey’s Anatomy continued to evolve.
“I have zero endings for Grey’s now. I mean, literally zero,” Rhimes said. “Until season 8, I still had endings. And by the way, I felt like I ended the series several times. I was like, ‘This could be the finale, this could be it,’ but it wasn’t.”
She went on to explain that many moments she once imagined for the show’s final chapter eventually found their way into regular episodes because the series simply kept moving forward.

Rhimes stepped away from the day-to-day role of showrunner years ago, handing responsibilities to longtime collaborators before the position was eventually taken over by current showrunner Meg Marinis. Despite no longer running the writers’ room, Rhimes has remained involved as an executive producer and continues to have input on major creative decisions.
Her comments reflected a reality that many longtime viewers already understood: Grey’s Anatomy has repeatedly reached points that felt like natural conclusions. Original cast members gradually departed, beloved characters were written out, and even Meredith Grey herself transitioned away from being the show’s central presence.
At the time, Marinis also suggested that there was “no end in sight” for the medical drama. Given the show’s enduring popularity, that assessment made perfect sense. Grey’s Anatomy remained one of ABC’s most valuable franchises and continued attracting millions of viewers through both broadcast television and streaming platforms.

Looking back, Rhimes’ remarks highlight one of the most remarkable aspects of Grey’s Anatomy: its ability to reinvent itself. What began as a medical drama centered on a group of surgical interns has evolved into one of the longest-running scripted television series in history.
And perhaps that’s why the show’s ending has remained such a mystery. Even its creator once admitted she didn’t know how it would end — because for the longest time, it simply wasn’t ending at all.
