đŹ Donnie Wahlberg Offes Half His Pay to Film ‘Boston Blue’ Locally!
Donnie Wahlberg says he went as far as offering up a significant portion of his paycheck in an effort to film âBoston Blueâ in his hometown, but the economics of television production ultimately won out.
Speaking on SiriusXMâs Radio Andy, Wahlberg detailed his push to keep the âBoston Blueâ spinoff authentic to its setting. The series, a continuation of his long-running âBlue Bloodsâ character Danny Reagan, is set in Boston but largely filmed in Toronto due to cost considerations.

âWhen I got offered the job, Iâm like, âThis is a dream come true.â I thought, Iâll do a spinoff in L.A. or Vegas or Texas, somewhere hot,â Wahlberg said during the interview. âAnd they were like, âHow about Boston?â I was like, âAhhhh.â They hooked me. And I was like, âAlright, letâs do it in Boston.ââ
However, he said producers quickly made clear that filming there wasnât financially viable. âAnd they were like, âBut we canât afford to shoot it in Boston, weâre gonna shoot it in Toronto.â I was like, âNo, no.â So, I said, âListen, Iâll give back 50% of my paycheck if we can go to Boston.â I did,â Wahlberg continued. âAnd they said, âYou can give back 100% and so can the rest of the cast, we cannot film this show in Boston.â Itâs so expensive. For the most part, we shoot in Toronto.â
Wahlberg added that even beyond cost, filming in Boston presents logistical challenges, noting that crowds and tour groups frequently disrupt shoots.
âBoston Blueâ has already been renewed for a second season. Season 1 is currently streaming on Paramount+.
